I am a Pansy
I was initially drawn to painting pansies because I was fascinated by the contrasting dark side and bright side of the flower. Like humans, they are both - dark and bright. No one is just one thing.
As I started studying the pansy, I learned that it also has a second meaning that also resonated with me. When you’re called a pansy, the conclusion is that you’re weak or maybe even effeminate. I realized that I am a pansy in many ways. Like everyone, I have a dark side and a bright side. I’ve been called weak and effeminate in my life.
I started to find myself in my paintings. I’ve learned that pansies are strong. They are one of the few flowers on earth that can withstand below freezing temperatures. They are also beautiful, coming in several different colors. While many people use them as a filler flower, I believe they can stand on their own as the centerpiece flower.
I hope my work showcases the complexity of the pansy while also paying them the respect they (and we) deserve.
